x402 Foundation
The x402 Foundation is the organization that stewards the x402 specification. The protocol's public repository is published under its GitHub organization, which is the source of record for the schemes, the challenge format and the facilitator operations.
Stewardship here means the specification's text, its payment schemes and its reference implementations live in a repository the Foundation publishes. Implementations, facilitators and catalogues are built above that specification by separate parties, each answering for its own service.
The protocol originated at Coinbase. The specification is published under the x402 Foundation's organization, and the protocol's documentation points implementers there.
The Linux Foundation announced the body's operational launch, describing it as an open-governance body formed to steward the x402 protocol — the open standard for internet-native payments over HTTP. That announcement states that the body operates under the same neutral governance, with published membership tiers. It also records the contribution of the protocol by Coinbase as completed.
